You are correct in that the Lafourche Creoles were Co G of the 18th. Silas T Grisamore was a sergeant in that company. He used "Uncle Silas" as a pen name. I agree with Don and highly recommend Dr Bergeron's book, "The Civil War Reminiscences of Major Silas T. Grismore." You should also consult his book "Guide to Louisiana Confederate Military Units 1861-1865." It gives details on both the 18th and Crescent (LA 24th Infantry) and their temporary consolidation. The two regiments would go on to travel and fight together in Mouton's/Gray's Brigade through most of the war. Both books are available on Amazon if they are not in your library.

Dr Bergeron added this footnote near Grisamore's description of the consolidation. "General Bragg disbanded the Crescent Regiment on June 30 and assigned its men to the 18th Louisiana. A primary reason for this order was the fact that approximately three hundred men of the Crescent had been detailed as clerks within the army." The Crescent's 90 day enlistment had expired and they had just suffered heavy losses at Shiloh.

I don't suppose the newspaper account gives names or further details on the memers of the Crescent? I would be very interested if it does.

I didn't find a S.H. Dexter in Louisiana troops either however there were two Samuel Dexters in Mississippi troops. It would not have been too unusual for him to have traveled to Miss. from the Thibodeaux area to join family or friends in a unit there.
