Of the recorded 263 unidentified Confederate soldiers buried in a mass grave at Iuka, only a handful -- perhaps a half dozen, give or take -- have markers of any kind placed by their families at the one-time trench that's now inside Shady Grove Cemetery. To date, we've been able to verify more than 100 individuals' names (and counting) through service records as having been killed outright in the battle or who died of wounds within a very few days. These would seem to be the most likely candidates for the mass interment.
The brave men of the 3rd Louisiana Infantry suffered tremendously in the fight. Along with them, the 3rd Texas Cavalry-Dismounted, 1st Texas Legion (27th Texas Cavalry-Dismounted), 40th Mississippi Infantry and 37th Alabama Infantry regiments also suffered double-digit losses of life. The 36th, 37th and 38th Mississippi Infantry regiments as well as the 14th and 17th Arkansas Infantry regiments not only contributed bravely to the fight, but also to the casualty total.
Thanks again. We'll keep looking.
