Sharpshooter Units

Through Art Bergeron's book on Louisiana Units, I remember (if I remember correctly) that there was only 1 Louisiana unit specifically designated as a sharpshooter unit - the 14th Battalion (Austin's).

Doing some research on Orders of Battle in the ANV, primarily Early's Raid on Washington and Shenandoah Valley (1864) there is reference made to Company D of the 1st Louisiana Sharpshooters, Lieutenant R. B. Joyce commanding. Did find Lt Joyce in Booth's: Joyce, R. B., Pvt. 1st Lt. Co. D, 1st (Nelligan's) La. Inf. Promoted to rank of Lt., May 5, 1864.

So question is or is it are? Was the 1st La Sharpshooters a standalone battalion? or Co D of the 1st La was given the duty as sharpshooters, but remained as part of the 1st La?
