Bruce Menger was the original captain of the Carondelet Invincibles from New Orleans. He was commanding the 5th Louisiana on May 12, 1864, when the Yankees broke through Spotsylvania's Bloody Angle. Menger was killed in the fight. One soldier wrote he was "one of the best field officers in our Brigade."
