I saw Husman's talk on the Johnson's Island baseball game at a past SABR Convention.

I'm heading up the Civil War baseball committee of SABR (Society of American Baseball Research) and yes, baseball teams were all over the south prior to 1861, in cities like New Orleans, Richmond and Galveston. At least 34 CW veterans played Major League professioal baseball (which started in 1876).
