If you have not done so, you should search for him in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 census records. His age and state of birth should appear. Courthouse records may shed some light on property ownership and perhaps marriage information. Tracking his parents may be more difficult. Census records prior to 1850 do not list all family members, so learning in which state he was born may not lead you to their names.
