Re: Cornelius-letter
In Response To: Cornelius-letter ()

Gary,my g.gf. was William H. Oliver a 2nd. Lt. Co.H.8th La. infty. In Terry Jones's "Lee's Tigers" page 180, footnote, William writes a letter to his Uncle Hiram Oliver, of Richmond Va. William has two brothers also enlisted. Cornelius Oliver, a corpl. Co. G. 8th La. cav.and Robert P. Oliver, Capt. Co. H. 16th. La. infty. I know that William was in Va. early in 1861, and Robert was involved in the Trans-Mississippi campaigns. I have been unable to find out much about Cornelius's calvary unit so do not when or where his regiment may have been deployed. I do know all three had strong connections to New Orleans and Richmond and old Uncle Hiram was quite wealthy. Cornelius died May 13th 1866 in New Orleans and was buried in the Girod Street Cememtary which was dismantled in the 1970's. If by chance this information fits the puzzle I would appreaciate a copy of your letter.
