Re: Jamie Roberts: Question re Confederate graves

1. Louis Jean DeVille - b. 1801, d. 1861. His grave marker reads:...

Don't know how I missed including him as I have seen his grave several times. Must be an error in my notes. As for which family lives across the road I can only say the oldest I recall living there was named Don Louis DeVille. He had a son by that name whom I believe was called "Louie". I think he was about 12 years of age when he was accidently killed with a gun.

There is a book in the reference section at the Ville Platte library that has pics of some of these men. Eli Clark, the Deville brothers, Benoit Johnson and a couple of others, in uniform! The pics are poor quality xerox copy but it tells me somebody has the originals somewhere.

Do you have records to confirm that Pvt. Benoit Johnson (also in Company K “Prairie Rangers”) is buried at McCormick Cemetery in Turkey Creek?

Yes, he is buried there and has a tombstone. IF you aren't aware, Pvt. Benoit Johnson became a preacher after the war and helped establish several congregations of what today is called the Church of Christ. I have a picture of him taken from an article in Word & Work Magazine in 1915 announcing his death. My brother's wife is a direct descendent of his.

I used to have access on my PC to some notes on Benoit Johnson's family but can't access them or I could tell you more. I believe you will find the Johnson vets buried at Turkey Creek cemetery in Turkey Creek to be his brothers.

if you know where David “Tobe” Clark is buried, I would greatly appreciate your sharing that information with me.

There is a David C Clark,Harrison's 3rd La. Cavalry, Company D, who is buried at Turkey Creek Cemetery. This must be your man. Go in the first gate off the east side. walk about ten or twelve steps into the cemetery and head west. His grave will be just past a large bush and faces west. My great-grandfather John Roberts, 7th Mississippi is buried next to that bush.

I only glanced over the David Clark pension application but I seem to remember he had a hard time getting his pension. Was there not also a David Clark in the 1st Battalion Louisiana Cavalry (Union)? If so, is this the same man? I don't mean any offense by that as I myself had a 3rd Great-uncle in that unit. JUst hoping to confirm that idea one way or the other.
