"Summarily punished"

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but suppose it's as good as any other, seeing as the incident in question occurred in Louisiana.

When a Major, and Supreme Commander of an expedition, tells a captain that "further disobedience to my orders would be summarily punished," am I correct in assuming that that means that if the captain persists in his errant behavior, he will be stood up against a tree and shot down like a dog? Does anyone else have any other interpretations of that statement? And if it's any help, the following line in the story is "The lieutenant and the men seemed quite dazed at this order; and the captain declared he was ready to obey my orders..."
