Re: Co K, 4th Louisiana Infantry.
In Response To: Co K, 4th Louisiana Infantry. ()

Stephen Jones was an original member of Co K, Packwoods Rifles. This company replaced Capt. Wingfields Company, the Beaver Creek Rifles. The Packwood Rifles joined the
4th Louisiana at Camp Moore just prior to the Battle of Baton Rouge.

After the Battle of the Poor House the 4th Louisiana fell back to the Sandtown Road, eastof Utoy Creek, eight milesfromAtlanta. Sandtown Road (present day Cascade Road) separated Gibson's Brigade fromthe 2ndBrigade Georgia Militia. The 4th was in these breastworks from July 29 until August 30.
On August 5th, the National Guards,Co B,and the Packwood Rifles were captured while on picket duty. They were sent to man unfinished redoubts on the skirmish line. Men from the 16th and 25th LA were to their left. Yankees from Union General Reilly's Brigade had crept up through their abatis during the night and attacked around 10 AM. Troops to the left of the 4th La gave way and the Yankees got in the rear of the 4th, 16th and 25th La.

In this un-named battle, a total of 24 men of the 4th La were lost in hand-to-hand combat. Captain Packwood was woundedand captured. Part ofthe drama of this scrimmage was the fact that it took place in the plain view of the regiment and there was nothing they could do to help.

The National Guards were left with five men on its rolls. Fifty men remained in the National Guards, Delta Rifles, and Packwood Rifles. These three companies were consolidated into one company under Capt. David Devall.
A recently published book on this regiment details the incident. "Tirailleurs: A History of the 4th Louisiana and the Acadians of Company H"
