In Response To: Co K, 4th Louisiana Infantry. ()

The service record for Corporal Stephen Jones says that he was killed on August 5th, 1864. The Battle of Utoy Creek, GA. was also fought on that date until August 7. The men keeping the records were pretty precise at times, so if they listed him as killed on a certain date, its most likely that he was killed then and did not die of wounds later, etc. During that time, Gen. S. Lee's Corps and Bates' Division of Gen. W. Hardee's Corps were involved in repulsing an advance by the Yankees. (The 4th LA. was in Lee's Corps).

If he was killed on that date as it states and not wounded at Ezra Church (called by some Louisiana troops as the Battle of the Poor House for one that stood on the grounds) then he most likely would be buried in a Fulton County cemetery. That would either be Oakland Cemetery (248 Oakland Ave., Atlanta , GA. 30312 -- 404-658-6019) or Westview Cemetery (1680 S. Gordon St. SW, Atlanta, GA. 30320-2362 -- 404-691-4124).

You may also ask assistance from one of the three Atlanta Chapters of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

A Federal officer with the 85th Illinois Infantry descibes that they charged and took the works. Stephan Jones is also mentioned in "Feliciana Confederates" by Michael Howell published in 1989 by the author, but it only repeats what is on the microfilmed service records. There is also a account of the 4th LA. Inf. called "Reluctant Rebel: The Secret Diary of Robert Patrick" edited by F. Jay Taylor, 1st published in 1959 by LSU Press and since republished many times. It will give you an idea of some of the movements of the 4th LA. during the war. I seem to recall a small book about the Packwood Guards, but dont recall the author or publisher. On that vein, you may wish to contact the Special Collections at Hill Memorial Library (Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA. 70803 -- 225-578-6544)They have a collection of the James Marchant Family Papers (Collection # Mss.3641) Marchant was the orderly sergeant of the Packwood Guards and it may contain some reference to Corporal Jones in these papers.

I hope some of this helps.
