Has anybody check this correspondence for any details?

Polk, Leonidas. Letter to Jefferson Davis reporting the death of Colonel D. W. C.
Bonham, 26 December 1861. Located in the Davis Papers, Catalog # R3, F443,
Tulane University, New Orleans, LA. A synopsis of this letter is available in
The Papers of Jefferson Davis, Volume 7, 212-219.

This citation in the Papers of Jefferson Davis gives no clues.

Everything that has ever been written on Camp Beauregard has agreed that his body was shipped to his home in Mississippi. The Surgeon of the 22d Mississippi Infantry in correspondence dated Lexington, MS 9/15/1915 to the UDC of Graves County, KY who were working on the history of Camp Beauregard stated:

HISTORY OF CAMP BEAUREGARD GRAVES COUNTY KENTUCKY
Published by SCV Camp No.1460
Mayfield, KY
1988

P. 25.

“The remains of most of the men of the 22nd Mississippi who died at Camp Beauregard were shipped back to their homes in Mississippi.”
