Preservation Kentucky Announces Battlefields & Beyond, Civil War Sites Preservation in the 21st Century to be held in historic Danville, Kentucky.

(May 29, 2013) Preservation Kentucky and its partners, the Kentucky Heritage Council, the Kentucky Historical Society and Mudpuppy Waterdog Inc, present Battlefields & Beyond: Civil War Sites in the 21st Century, August 15th-17th 2013, in historic Danville, Kentucky. This is the first Civil War sites preservation conference in Kentucky since 1993 and will be a regional educational forum for administrators, staff, docents and board members of Civil War battlefields, historic sites and museums to learn best practices for preservation and interpretation.

The first day features three workshops. James DeWolf Perry, Executive Director of The Tracing Center on Histories and Legacies of Slavery, will explore the role of African Americans in the Civil War and examine opportunities for giving voice to those whose contributions and stories have been too long underrepresented. Maria Campbell Brent, Certified Interpretive Planner, will conduct a workshop on developing interpretation that engages visitors and helps sites achieve their mission. Brian Mabelitini, a historic archaeologist, will present “Archaeology 101” and will discuss ways to use archaeology to build a core constituency and as a tool for interpretation and tourism.

Day two features presentations that will explore the opportunities and challenges associated with the perpetual preservation of Civil War sites. Presenters drawn from the public and private sectors include Fred Prouty, Director of the Tennessee Wars Commission, who will open the conference with his unique perspective on Civil War interpretation and preservation. Tanya Gossett of the National Park Service will close the proceedings with a state of the battlefields report. Representatives from American Battlefield Protection Program, Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, Berea College, Camp Nelson Heritage Park, Civil War Helena (Arkansas), Museum of the Confederacy, National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, Tennessee Civil War Preservation Association, Tennessee National Heritage Area, The Civil War Trust, The Tracing Center on Histories and Legacies of Slavery, and others will present thought provoking and innovative information in a forum that invites participation.

Battlefields and Beyond will feature sessions and events held in Civil War-era buildings, tours of Civil War-era downtown Danville, Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site, and Camp Nelson Heritage Park, a U.S. army quartermaster depot and USCT recruiting and training depot.

Join us this summer and enjoy Bluegrass hospitality, good food, music, and an educational experience second to none. Learn more and register at: www.civilwarconference.org.
