J. L. Fleming, age 34, 2nd Sergeant, Capt. S. F. Chipley's Company, 2nd Regiment Kentucky Infantry,* enlisted July 13, 1861 at Camp Boone, Tenn. by Capt. Chipley for the duration of the war, captured at Fort Donelson February 12, 1862, sent to Camp Morton, Indiana prison, subscribed to the Oath of Allegiance to the US, no date, listed on a roll of prisoners sent to Vicksburg, Miss. for exchange August 24, 1862, a notation on his record of Jefferson County, Ky. most likely indicates his home of residence, no further records

Note: Had he subscribed to the Oath of Allegiance while at Camp Morton, it is doubtful that he was with the transport transferring the men to be exchanged to Vicksburg. In as much as he does not appear on later company muster rolls, we can assume he never returned to his command

* This company subsequently became Company E, 2nd Regiment Kentucky (Mounted) Infantry
