William --

A couple of errors which should be corrected. First, this man served with Co "I", Cluke's 8th Kentucky Cavalry, not the 8th Kentucky of Buford's Brigade. In 1864 that regiment began serving as a mounted command under General Forrest. Cluke's 8th Kentucky Cavalry served under John Hunt Morgan; the other regiment did not.

Second, W M Patton was captured during Morgan's "Great Raid" of the summer of 1863. If I'm not mistaken, Morgan and his men broke into banks at Sterling and other points during the June 1864 raid. At that time Patton was in prison camp at Camp Douglas. His service file shows date and place of capture as being Salineville OH, July 26, 1863. Evidently in early March 1865 he was sent from Point Lookout MD to City Point VA for exchange. The service file includes an oath of allegiance to the U S dated May 20, 1865, Richmond VA.

Last name given as 'Patten'.
