Walter and William joined the 21st Virginia Infantry Battalion on 4/5/62 in Buchanan County, but no record for Charles. On the other hand, both Charles and Walter were listed in the 1860 Buchanan census, but no mention of William. Both William and Walter are listed as deserting the 21st per the 10/31/62 muster roll. This probably happened during Humphrey Marshall's return to Virginia from the central Kentucky campaign of Sept-Oct '62 which culminated in the Perryville fight. Around October 21, the service of the 12-month men of the Fifth Kentucky, one of Marshall's regiments in that campaign, ended when they reached Hazel Green, KY and several hundred of them simply went home rather than reinlist.
Both William and Walter also served a brief stint in Company D of the 2nd Virginia State Line, a militia unit under the command of John B. Floyd. William was also in Witcher's 34th Virginia Cavalry Battalion, Company C, for a short time.
William, Walter and Charles eventually enrolled in the 10th KY Cavalry, Charles on 7/1/63 in Grundy; William and Walter on 3/28/63 in Grundy. Charles and Walter are both on the 1898 Buchanan County veteran census.
