The Kentucky in the Civil War Message Board

Lewis F. Bolton Co G 9th Ky.

I'm researching my 2nd Great Grandfather and trying to find more information.

According to the Adj. Generals Report he enlisted in Bowling Green Nov 1 1861 Company G, Kentucky 9th Infantry Regiment.

Unfortunately the next page where it would show some of his service, several lines are missing.

The book "History of the First Kentucky Brigade" reads;

"L. F. Bolton, Edmonson County, Ky., was in several of the infantry engagements, but it is not definitely remembered if he served as mounted trooper or not."

Also found this from "Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 2nd ed., 1885, Butler Co." It read;

"LEWIS F. BOLTON, Butler County, was born September 23, 1837, in Whitley County, Ky., and in 1841 removed with his parents to Butler County, locating on Big Reedy Creek, on the place where he now resides. Sympathizing with the South, and believing in the right of succession, he took up arms to maintain his views, enlisting, in 1861, in the Ninth Kentucky (Confederate) Infantry, in in [sic] which he served until the final settlement of the conflict; he returned home and since has been an honored and law-abiding citizen."

According to this he remained with the 9th throughout the war.

Can anyone shed more light on his service? Could something have happened to his records which explains why several lines are missing from the Adj. Generals Report?

Another Bolton Joseph is listed as well, he enlisted at the same time and is also from Edmonson County. He was wounded at Shiloh, captured and died at Camp Chase, Ohio. He most likely a relative, but the connection is not known by me in the present. Any information on who he is would be appreciated.

Thank you, David
