Re: Kentucky 1st Battalion Mounted Rifles, Company

George, thanks so much for the information on both John T. Jones and Dunlap Gay. The two men at the time of enlistment were not related but most likely friends and contemporaries. After the war the two families were united by marriage. John Jones continued in the war riding with Morgan's Men and was at the battle of Cynthiana (sp) where he was wounded in the arm. I have a letter written by Ezekiel Clay concerning his loyalty to the confederacy. I think again there was confusion concerning the two John Jones. He did in fact end up at the soldiers home in Pee Wee Valley. I visited his grave a few years ago and the cemetery was in very good condition. After the war John and all his sons trained race horses in Kentucky, Tennessee and finally Texas.

I know disease was a major killer in the Civil War so maybe that is what happened to Dunlap. thank you for letting me know there were no battles going on at that point. I have a feeling that finding his gravesite may prove difficult. I did not have a regimental history of the battles they participated in other than the end at Cynthiana which was on John Jones admission papers to the home.
