Hello.
That was and is a wonderful post. The article out of Texas is outstanding.
I never realized that Gen. Johnston had such a nice tribute in Texas. It is certainly a good thing that it was done back then.
I would suggest you try one of the LDS libraries or even go to Salt Lake City if you can to research that claim. The volunteers at the library are so helpful and nice and it really is worth your time and effort to get there.
In regard to the man Johnston himself, my own great grandfather was shot at Shiloh receiving the same wound that he did. The difference was that my ggrandfather James Thomas Harper who was a Pvt with the 5th Tenn did not have an artery severed.
According to our oral family history, Harper was there at the field hospital when the general's body was brought in and all of his men were greatly upset and crying. Because he told that story I knew when he had been shot.
I had four relatives shot that day, two died and are known but to God, and the other two went home to heal as they had kinfolks nearby.
It was a terrible fight and to be honest, none were really prepared for it in my way of thinking.
Good luck with your search.
Linda
