The Indian Territory in the Civil War Message Board

Fort Smith N.H.S.

I remember, as a boy, visiting what is now Fort Smith National Historic Site. It was ok. In the past
twelve years or so, I have twice visited and the changes and improvements in the site and its
interpretation are wonderful to behold. With the army's long-term involvement, the Civil War
and, of course, Judge Parker's court, there is, indeed, much to interpret. Being an urban historic
site (as is Fort Scott NHS), it shows what Fort Gibson can and should be. If you have never
been to Fort Smith or, haven't been in years, it is well worth a visit. Every NPS site has a
research library, open by appointment. The park's library is an untapped resource. There
are also other things to see in the city and some great eating places. Again, worth a day
or weekend trip.
