Re: Supplement to the Official Records

Brief Overview of the Supplement to the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies (Broadfoot Publishing)

The Supplement to the OR was arranged as follows;

• Part I Volumes 1 - 10 "Reports" arranged by Serial Number

sections for national or specialty troops (Colored, Engineers, Indians ect).
• Part III Volumes 1 - 3 "Correspondence" documents arranged by year(s).
• Index Volumes 1 - 5

All this adds up to exactly 100 volumes

The material which pertained to the IT and some of the surrounding areas included;

• Part I Vol. 1, PP 203 - 270 Ark/Mo/IT May 10th, 1861 to Nov 19th, 1861. Highlights include John Ross Proclamation and reports on Wilson's Creek. Nothing on Round Mountain battle.
• Part I Vol. 1, PP 529 - 572 Ark/Mo/It Nov 19th, 1861 to April 10th, 1862. Highlights include some IT winter campaign after Round Mountain and material on Pea Ridge.

• Part I Vol. 4, PP 29 - 92. Cane Hill and Prairie Grove. Lots of material on Prairie Grove.
• Part I Vol. 4, PP 133 - 140. Green Leaf Prairie.
• Part I Vol. 4, PP 145 - 150. Honey Springs.
• Part I Vol. 4, PP 165 - 166. Watie's demonstration on Fort Gibson.
• Part II Vol. 73, PP 513 - 581. Brief unit histories of Confederate Indian Troops some at company level.
• Part II Vol. 80, PP 603 - 663. Brief unit histories of Indian Home Guard Troops some at company level.

The above may not be exhaustive but I only had a few hours there.

The big winner in terms of the IT area for me was Prairie Grove. There were a lot of reports here from that battle. I didn't really find much about the latter part of the war in the IT but there was some material about Price's Raid. To tell the truth, I was running out of time and had to skim.

I'll use Honey Springs as a kind of example of the material I found.
1. The first report was basically the letter from D. H. Cooper to James M. Bell asking him to make public the information that Col. Waite was on "detached service" an not at Honey Springs. This letter is on pages 140-141 in the "Cherokee Cavaliers" book.
2. The next item was a letter from Charles DeMorse protesting Cooper's neglect of his regiment (29th TX Cav) in the official reports.
3. The next item was Coopers acknowledgment of the oversight and agreement to endorse and to forward DeMorse's letter to Steele to set the record straight.
4. The last item was a report from Otis G. Welch to Col. Bass who commanded the center of the Confederate line at Honey Springs.

All the above material, if I recall correctly, was published in "The Standard" Newspaper of Clarksville, TX.

The last two volumes listed above (Part II Vols 73 and 80) also looked important. There was at least 60 pages about the Indian troops for each side.

Anyway, that is kind of my quick summary of the supplement. With that and five bucks, you should be able to buy a cup of coffee at Starbucks. ;)
