As you know, only a few pieces of this puzzle have been found but apparently the Chickasaw Regiment was built from the 1st Chickasaw Battalion commanded by Harris, Reynolds, and Sheco (aka Shecoe). No documentation has been found showing that the battalion 'officially' became a regiment but, as you know, it was sometimes called a regiment beginning in June 1864.

In the summer of 1864, Lt Col Reynolds is commanding the "Chickasaw Regiment". In August 1864, Roswell W. Lee is promoted to colonel. In October, it has been left at Cochran's to reorganize -- the same date as the organization of Sheco's Battalion with Martin Sheco promoted to lt. col. (formerly captain co. A), Jonathan Nail promoted to major (formerly captain co. G or more commonly "Nail's Company"), other captains and lieutenants from Reynold's command have new companies.

The same time as the reorganization, the Chickasaw National Council calls for all Chickasaw men to enlist and fill up the ranks of the Chickasaw Regiment before they are conscripted in 30 days -- this suggests to me that the companies other than Sheco's Battalion may not have been organized yet. The known company letters of Sheco's Battalion are not in sequential order, indicating there were other companies that were part of the regiment which were not part of Sheco's Battalion. The muster rolls of the Chickasaw Regiment have not been found but their accompanying communication to HQ indicate there were about 8 companies that R.W. Lee knew of and others he was told were assigned to him but he had never heard from.

I speculate that the 'regiment' never reached regimental strength and was never officially recognized. There are so few records it's hard to be absolutely certain but there are clues that I run across from time to time that help with a clearer picture.
