John Brown, John Kagi, and A.C. Spilman

Thanks for posting George. You motivated me to read more on Phillips. I didn't know a lot about him except that he was a journalist for Horace Greely and somehow involved with John Brown and John Kagi in Kansas during the 'Bleeding Kansas' period. I found some more tidbits of information that I found interesting.

Phillips' friend John Henry Kagi was a 'lieutenant' of John Brown and was killed in the raid on Harper's Ferry. After the Battle of Middle Boggy, Feb. 13, 1864, Phillips named their camp "Camp Kagi", Chickasaw Nation.

Phillips' bro-in-law was Alexander C. Spilman. Spilman became captain, co. B, 3rd Indian Home Guards.

Another associate of Brown and Kagi was John Richie who became colonel, 2nd Indian Home Guards. He supported the underground railroad in Topeka.

Another Brown follower who did not got to Harper's Ferry was 1st Lt. Luke F. Parsons, Co. C., 3rd IHG.

There is original correspondence between or about these men at http://www.territorialkansasonline.org/
