I'm with you. Cochran's was such a landmark and likely a very large and self-sufficient 'settlement' it makes sense that Union troops would use it as camp, headquarters, or rally point. Usually mileages were fairly accurate but if they weren't moving on a direct route that could make a difference. My point is, I struggle with the battle being on Middle Boggy and Camp Kagi being at Cochran's because they are only about 12 miles apart instead of 21 miles per Phillips reports. Phillips says Camp Kagi was on 'South Boggy' which is another name for 'Clear Boggy' or just 'Boggy'. I've speculated that Camp Kagi was at Cochran's and the battle was 21 miles northeast towards the mouth of Little River and in the Choctaw Nation -- Hughes County around Atwood?

Considering this was essentially a search and destroy mission, his detachments were moving east-west as much as north-south. In the days before the battle, he says he's sweeping both sides of the Canadian. In northeastern Pontotoc County, for some miles the Dragoon Trail (to Ft Washita) and the Ft Smith-Ft Arbuckle Road are the same.

Was there a courthouse in the area? I read that there was a courthouse approved by the Chickasaw Council for the district but the writer said there was no mention of it existing prior to the war. The report about Jumper said he fell back to the courthouse and then toward Ft Arkbuckle. So he was most likely on the Ft Smith-Ft Arbuckle road and, if there was a Pontotoc Courthouse, seems it would most likely have been at or near Cochran's.
