Reported as a Regt. on some records, but no evidence found to show it was officially recognized as such.
Miscellaneous records on file in Confed. Archives Section, (Memo. in Battn. Jacket) show this Battn. was in service in July 1862 under "Lt. Col." Jos. D. Harris, who is reported in Oct. '63 as Ex. Col. of the Battn. then commanded by Lt. Col. Lemuel M. Reynolds, formerly a Capt, in the 1st Choctaw and Chickasaw Regt. In Sept. '62, Major Harris, who may have been identical with Lt. Col. Harris, was reported as Maj. Comdy. Battn. In Oct. '63, M.H. Campbell was reported as Maj. serving under Lt. Col. Reynolds in the Battn.
In Apr. '63, James Gamble was reported as Capt. Co. B, Chickasaw Battn. In Aug. '64, Lt. Johnson was Comdg. a detachment of Colbert's Co., Chickasaw Battn., which was reported by Brig. Gen. Cooper to be Co. K, 1st Chickasaw Regt. On Oct. 6, 1861, he reports that the Regt. had been allowed to remain at Cochran's for Reorganization.
From the fact that a Chickasaw Battn. of Mounted Vols. was orgd. Oct. 7, 1864, under Lt. Col. Martin Shecoe and Maj. Jonathan Nail, it is believed that this was a reorganization of the Old Command under new Field Officiers. This is also confirmed by enlistments on rolls fo Co. A. having been made by Capt. Zach. Colbert.
No cardable records are found on file as of the old orgn. Some few records are on file with Shecoe's Chickasaw Battn. Mounted Vols.
