Cochran Academy? ... Chickasaw Rock Academy
In Response To: Re: Battle at Middle Boggy ()

Ken Martin,
.
Question: Where was the Cochran Academy? ... The subject of this thread, but if we ask the question with different inflections, we may awaken sleepers.
.
Immediately below is what I have on "Wapanuaka" and the "Chickasaw Rock Academy" in my book. And just below that is an article about a gent who built the Chickasaw Rock Academy.
.

.
Chickasaw Rock Academy, (Confederate), est. 1852 on the Delaware Branch of Delaware Creek (formerly known as
Wapanucka Creek), where the Wapanucka post office was est. in 1883. Chickasaw Rock Academy, or Robinson Academy, was probably at sec8 twp2S ran8E, now Johnston County. G.B. Hester of Raleigh NC, a merchant who came in 1861 to Boggy Depot, arrived in Tishomingo with his wife who was a missionary at the Chickasaw Academy where John C. Robinson was the superintendent. see ORsIv41/3[S#85]p983 (Oct 6, 1864).
.
Wapanuaka, 1883 became a post office then in 1888 it was moved four (4) miles east to its present location in now
Johnston County. The 1883 location on the Delaware Branch of Delaware Creek (Wapanucka Creek) was the site of the Chickasaw Rock Academy. “Wapanucka” is a Chickasaw word meaning “eastern people” which is what the Chickasaw called the Delaware tribe.

.
Rev. John Newton Hamill, m-1835 Hemstead Co AR to Martha Brown Carr, was a Methodist minister. In the 1850s, he helped build the Rock Academy, near Wapanucka, of the Chickasaw Nation, Tishomingo Co, [now Johnston Co OK].

Rev. Hamill then moved to Fort Arbuckle, Pickens Co, Chickasaw Nation, I.T. [now Garvin Co OK], then to Cooke Co TX to escape lawlessness during Civil War. He served on the Citizens Court jury during the October 1862 Great Hanging of Gainesville.

.

As Winchester Colbert’s attorney ca. March 1, 1863 in Tishomingo Co., I.T., (now Johnston Co OK), Hamill
wrote the following letter to Col. James Bourland:
.

Received by the hand of Rev. John N. Hamill and in answer I have to say that I have been making every effort
to get ready to cooperate with our friends on the other side of Red River. The Legislature has made an appropriation of $6,750.00 for ammunition and subsistence. The amount is small, but it is all I could get. My Quarter Master will make his purchases as soon as possible. My express to Genl. [D.H.] Cooper has not yet returned, but when he does, I will let you know what Genl. Cooper says on the subject. I received a letter from Chief [T.B] Turnbull of the Choctaw Nation saying that they were preparing to cooperate with us, but that they have no [gun] powder and they did not know how or where to get any.

I have also sent an invitation to the commander at Caddo [probably to CSA Major George Washington of the
Whitebead band of the Caddo Tribe of the old Caddo County, Chickasaw District, Choctaw-Chickasaw Nation,
I.T.] to especially return.

Please write me [by express] __s from your side.

In Haste, Yours,

W. [Winchester] Colbert [Governor of the Chickasaw Nation, I.T.].

(see ORsIv41/3[S#85]p984 for Rock Academy). per BP-DM4406-3N-001.

.
Later, about 1887, "Aunt Cora Fuller (1864-1952) of Bonham TX and gdau of Col. James Bourland," taught at the Wapanucka Institute for many years. I have wonderful photos of her with her students.
.
And yes, I have a photo of Rev. J.N. Hamil
.

.
Questions are welcome.
