I'm not counting but I did notice within a relatively small group there were a large number of slaves for slaveowners not involved in large scale cotton plantations.

I didn't understand the significance of the comment on Perryville but...

My synopsis of Perryville forward...

Blunt advanced down the Texas Road in August 1863. He caught up with the Confederate rear guard at Perryville and fought a short battle. The Confederates were trying to save as much commissary stores as possible and, of course, delay the advance. The Confederates retreated and the Feds destroy the remaining stores and storehouses at Perryville. Steele was assembling his forces and calling for reinforcements from Texas to gather at Little Boggy to halt the Fed advance.

Blunt retired on the Texas Road and took the Beale Wagon Road along Canadian over to Camp Pike (the old Confederate camp just northeast of present Whitefield). Col Cloud heads east driving Cabell's pickets from Iron Bridge on San Bois to Scullyville to the Poteau. Cloud scouts to Ft Smith and finds it abandonned and Cabell has passed down the Line Road via Jenny Lind toward Waldron. Cloud pursues and engages Cabell at Devil's Backbone (Sebastian Cty AR near present Greenwood). Blunt occupies Ft Smith without a fight. Cabell retreats via Waldron. Bankhead is set by Steele to join Cabell but Cabell has already retreated southeast and Bankhead can't find him.

Steele is relieved of command in December 1863 and replaced by Maxey. The Federals hold Ft Smith for the remainder of the war. Phillips invades the Creek, Seminole, and Chickasaw Nations in Feb 1864 but doesn't get to follow up with his planned Choctaw Expedition. Other than heavy scouting, the Union Troops are occupied trying to maintain their supply lines and feed/protect refugees and don't again make a serious campaign south of the Canadian.
