Re: Phillips Expedition - Feb 1864

Danny,
Just to nitpick... way out of character for me, right? ;)... The Choctaw didn't "sell" lands to the Chickasaw. At the time of the removals, the tribes agreed to combine and share their new lands in the west. Although there was a Chickasaw District, most Chickasaw lived in other parts of the combined Nation and, as I'm sure you know, there was a great deal of intermarrage between the Choctaw and Chickasaw, e.g., the Colberts.

The boundary of the Chickasaw District, I have been told, was in part the route of Col Leavenworth from Ft Holmes ("Old") to Ft Washita in the Dragoon Expedition of 1834. In the late 1850s, the politicians of the two tribes agreed to separate again into two Nations. The Chickasaw District became approximately the new Chickasaw Nation although the boundary became a straight line from the Canadian (aka South Canadian) to the Blue, passing 3 miles east of the Chickasaw Rock Academy (Wapanucka), and followed the Blue southeast to Red River.
