Re: Gov."Winchester Colbert"
In Response To: Gov."Winchester Colbert" ()

I have a two primary documents from BOURLAND PAPERS and the 1860 Federal census of Indian Territory that may add a few data points to the life of Daughterty Winchester Colbert (1810-1887). .. Patti, prochette@Juno.com

Below are several facts then questions:

Facts: ..(1) a letter to Col. James Bourland from the BOURLAND PAPERS; ..(2) Texas Historical marker; ..(3) Hamill was the Supentindent of the Colbert Institute; ..(4) 1860 U.S Federal Census, Panola County with a Ft Arbuckle Post Office.

1) [To Col. James Bourland]:

Received by the hand of Rev. John N. Hamill and in answer I have to say that I have been making every effort to get ready to cooperate with our friends on the other side of Red River. ..The Legislature has made an appropriation of $6,750.00 for ammunition and subsistence. ..The amount is small, but it is all I could get.

My Quarter Master will make his purchases as soon as possible. ..My express to Genl. [D.H.] Cooper has not yet returned, but when he does, I will let you know what Genl. Cooper says on the subject. ..I received a letter from Chief [T.B] Turnbull of the Choctaw Nation saying that they were preparing to cooperate with us, but that they have no [gun] powder and they did not know how or where to get any. ..have also sent an invitation to the commander at Caddo to especially return.

Please write me [by express] __s from your side.

In Haste, Yours,

W. [Winchester] Colbert [Governor of Chickasaw Nation, IT]. per BP-DM4406-3N-001 (BOURLAND PAPERS)

2) Cooke County authorities “gave $4,000 for munitions and wool cards to make cloth.” ... compared with the “$6,750 for ammunition and subsistence” given by Chickasaw Winchester Colbert to the State of Texas or maybe the Confederacy via Col. Bourland. ..per a Texas Historical Marker in Gainesville TX and BP-DM4406-3N-001 immediately above.

3) In 1858-1860 Methodist Rev. John Newton Hamill (1810-1867) was the superintendent of the Colbert Institute. ..Hamill was later a juror in the October 1862 Great Hanging Trial in Gainesville, Texas. ..Earlier in the 1850s, Hamill helped build the Chickasaw Rock Academy, near Wapanucka (now Johnston Co OK). ..In 1852 Methodist Rev. John Harpole Carr (1812-1879), brother to Martha Brown Carr Hamill, helped build then became the first director of the Boomfield Seminary.

4) 1860 Ft Arbuckle P.O., Panola County, Chickasaw Nation, I.T. census (now Garvin Co OK), page 1195, August 10, Dwelling 40 - Family 40, John N. Hamill, age 50 SC, Methodist minister; ..Martha [Carr] age 43 TN .... neighbor Rev. John Harpole Carr (1812-1879)

At first glance, this census does not ring true. ..Fort Arbuckle was a long way from Panola County of pre-1855 Chickasaw District and and even further from the post-1855 Panola County of the Chickasaw Nation. ..It is natural for people to refer to the old name of a place, so just because the the county name was legally changed does not mean that people immediately used the new county name.

It is important for the reader to understand that the pre-1855 Chickasaw District of the Choctaw Nation had counties WITHOUT well-defined or vague county lines and maybe it was thought that Panola County hugged the west bank of the Washita River up to past Fort Arbuckle:

Caddo County area (1855 became Pontotoc County)
Wichita County area (1855 became Pickens County)
Perry County area (1855 became Pontotoc and Tishomingo Counties plus Panola County - east of the Washita River)
Panola County area - west of the Washita River (1855 became Pickens County)

EDITOR's NOTE: I will send maps upon request since I don't know how to post a photo.

Questions:

a) Where were Hamill and Winchester Colbert when this letter was written? ..When was this letter written?

b) Who was the commander at Caddo?

Maybe CSA Major George Washington of the Whitebead band of the Caddos who lived at Washington, on the north bank of the Washita River, near Whitebead on the south bank of the Washita River.

c) Caddo. What did Hamill mean by the place “Caddo”?
......c1) Did Hamill mean Old Caddo County? later Pontotoc County?
......c2) Did Hamill mean the Caddo community in Blue County, Pushmataha District, Choctaw Nation,
...............now Bryan Co OK?

My first thought was that the “Caddo” reference was the Old Caddo County on the North side of the Washita River where the Washington community on now Washington Creek is cited on an 1869 map by Henry Jackson. ..This Washington community was also referenced in the NORTHERN STANDARD (Apr. 6, 1863, Clarksville, TX) stating that A.Z. Pike stationed the Tonkawas on Rocky Creek near the “road to Washington.” ..(Rocky Creek is close to now Sulphur OK)

d) Does anyone have a copy of the 1860 census pages showing where Winchester Colbert lived? ..Who were his neighbors? I have copies of only six pages of this 1860 Yell County, Arkansas census that addresses the Chickasaw Nation and Choctaw Nation.

4) son of Martha Brown Carr [1817 Wilson Co TN-1867 Hopkins Co TX] and Rev John Newton Hamill [1810 York Dist SC-1867 Hopkins Co TX, m-1835 Hempstead Co AR], Methodist minister, ... in 1850s helped build the Chickasaw Rock Academy [see ORsIv41/3[S#85]p984, near Wapanucka [now Johnston Co OK], ... 1858-1860 Superintendent of the Colbert Institute, ... 1860 census found in Panola District with post office at Ft Arbuckle, Pickens Co, Chickasaw Nation, I.T. [now Garvin Co OK], ...Oct 1862 lived in Gainesville, Cooke Co TX, went there to escape lawlessness during Civil War. ... died 1867 Hopkins County TX. ... Hamill was evidently back in Indian Territory when he conferred with Winchester Colbert about this important letter written about March 1, 1864.
