To the descendants of the 6th Georgia. Col. John R. Hart was more then the peccadillos mentioned by Nesbit. Later in his book Nesbit states, "Colonel Hart was one of General Wheeler's best officers; a gallant soldier, a dashing cavalryman." John H. King, Co.L, writing about Hart and officers of the 6th, "these were brave, chivalrous men, ready always to dare, and, if necessary to die in the discharge of duty." John W. Maddox tells of Hart threatening the notorious guerrilla leader Gatewood, if Gatewood hurt a hair on the head of union prisoners. I could go on with numerous accounts of Hart's gallantry and bravery. What image are we to hold of the man who led our ancestors in that terrible war? J. W. Minnich, Co. G, gives us one, when the regiment was about to break at Jay's Mill, during the Battle of Chickamauga. "Hart spurred his mount along our line revolver in hand and shouted, 'Hold your ground 6th Georgia! I'll shoot the first man that leaves the line!' I can see him yet- face white and red by turns, his blue eyes flashing, a picture of wrath. The boys all knew that he meant just what he threatened."
