The 1st Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry (Ramsey's) was formed in Macon in the beginning of April, 1861, and was sent to Pensacola as a result of a request from Confederate Secretary of War Leroy P. Walker to Governor Joseph E. Brown - The regiment was camped behind Fort Barrancas and did basically garrison duty, moving cannon and equipment and building sand batteries. The regiment was transferred to Richmond two months later, then to Northwest Virginia to serve under Brig. Gen. Robert S. Garnett. The field officers were Col. James N. Ramsey, Lt. Col. James O. Clarke, and Major George Harvey Thompson.
