In researching the civil war burials of Highland cemetery in Wichita, ks. I have come across a number of unmarked graves both union and confederate. One name is John Henry Shields, supposedly of Cobbs Georgia Legion. He was a newspaper editor who died a poor man and is in the potters field. A newspaper article noted his death on Nov 10, 1916, confirming only that he was a southern soldier, born in Ga. Family records follow him to Tenn before the war. He was an editor here of a farming journal and addressed as Captain, maybe an honorary title.

Another buried in the same plot is a Richard Cogdell a supposed captain in the 26th Georgia. I cannot verify this however.

I need some help and advice on these burials. I know they are southern soldiers and once I can confirm units will provide the scv the information.

Richard Cogdell is my great-grandfather. He was born in Darien, Georgia Oct 15 1846 the son of Lavinia Torrance Clark and Laban Mason Smith. His birth name was Henry Turner Smith. He was adopted by Richard Cogdell who had no children and wanted someone to carry on his name. This is as noted in our family genealogy compiled by his daughter Richard Ann (Dixie) Cogdell Hutchins in the 1940's and published for the family by her husband Lester Hutchins in the 1960's. I believe this adoption occurred near the Civil War. He is in the 1850 census listed as Henry T age 4 son of Laban and Lavinia. His obituary March 23, 1926 in the Wichita Eagle (he died March 22, 1926) states "A product of the Old South, Mr. Cogdell was born in Darian, GA and served during the Civil war in the Confederate army. Under General Morgan, an officer who struck terror to the North by brilliant military tactics, Mr. Cogdell served as a scout and gained a reputation as one of the most fearless soldiers in the army. He attained the rank of captain." Richard married my great-grandmother Louisa Jane Davis Brugh in Botetourt County VA in 1870 as per following transcription. They moved to Wichita in 1872 where they are both buried. They are both pioneers of Wichita and he was a sheriff there from 1877-1878.
