Re: 2nd Georgia Infantry Battalion

Scott,

I have been compiling a list of slaves at Gettysburg and would be interested in details of Lt. Albert A. Freeman's servant that you mention and the source of the information. Is he identified by name? Many were not. I would guess that Freeman was taken to a field hospital where he gave his personal effects to his servant along with the other two swords for safekeeping. Servants normally traveled with the wagon train of wounded (which departed on July 4) and several were indeed captured at Monterrey Springs on the night of July 4/5 by Federal cavalry. I can't figure out how the 25th Ohio could be involved unless the servant deserted earlier - elements of the Eleventh Corps held the town on July 4 and some field hospitals came under their control at that time. I don't have very much on Wright's brigade hospitals, but many Floridians of Lang's brigade in the same division were taken to Pennsylvania College (now Gettysburg College) in town. A few Confederate soldiers did not get the word to evacuate the town before daylight on July 4 and awoke to find themselves prisoners, and that also might be the case with this servant. Regards, Tom
