Spelling of name sometimes listed as A.B. Sweeny, which is a incorrect spelling.
It is likely that he was severely wounded at a battle in October/Nov 1862, Battle of Chickamauga

He was appointed 2nd lieutenant in the Veteran Reserves Corps on 10 July 1863, by Abraham Lincoln, Washington, June 20, 1864
He was a member of; Encampment No. 69 Union Veteran Legion -
which stated in a newspaper article of 29 May 1897, in Washington DC: " Four member of the Command have passed away since Memorial Day 1896, among them were Augustus B. Sweeney."
He was buried 1896, in Arlington Cemetery, Prague, Lincoln County, Oklahoma USA (a private cemetery)
