Burial Location

The following is an excerpt of data concerning a relative, Charles.C. Vandiver, that I have written an article that will be included in the Vandiver's Genealogy that I am only beginning to consolidate after about 20 years of research.

Charles C. is the eldest of three Vandiver sons hat served in the Civil War and is the only brother which did not survive. Charles C. enrolled as a Pvt. on 6-14-1861 at Camp McDonald in Co. C, 18th Ga. Infantry. My Great Grandfather, George Cornelius Vandiver served in the 13th/16th Battalion Georgia Calvary and survived the war without any known wounds.

A 3rd brother served, but the file with his name is not before me. The younger brother was part of a GA unit that opposed Sherman as he marched across Georgia burning and pillaging as he marched to supply his solders. If memory serves me, the 3rd brother was only 15 when he enlisted and I have a record of a slight wound to his arm or hand which occurred in or near Savannah.

I am leaving a few brief excerpts from Charles .C. service record in the hope that someone might enlighten me as to the cause of his death. The muster roll dated Jul-Aug 1862 is remarked as "Absent without leave". The final muster roll dated Nov. 1862 remarks as follows: Absent enlisted man accounted for: "Sick at Richmond"

I suppose that he died from some disease, likely Whooping Cough, Measles, or Diarrhea all of which were common diseases suffered by soldiers from both the north and south. If someone would determine if there was any particular disease that was an epidemic during the latter part of 1862 in the Richmond Confederate hospitals. There are no other muster rolls for C.C. Vandiver.

Any major battles in which the 18th Inf. Regiment, with dates of participation would be greatly appreciated.

I assume that C.C. Vandiver is buried in an unmarked grave in one of the Richmond cemeteries, but i do not know where to start. I spoke with an author several years ago that had written a book about the Hollywood cemetery, but he had no record of a marked grave for C.C. Vandiver.

Any assistance in helping me locate a possible burial site for CC. Vandiver will be appreciated. He is the only close relative that served Civil War for which I do not have a grave site.

I should get a swift kick in the rear for waiting until I am almost 88 years old to start consolidating and writing into a narrative in order to record the history of the Vandiver family which began during the American Revolution. Anyone want to volunteer to assist me?? Thanks for any input from anyone.
