The Georgia in the Civil War Message Board

His surname still lives on

Robert Augustus Guinn was a Confederate soldier in the 18th Georgia Infantry until discharged and also served in another six month unit later on until his six months expired. He was probably best well known for the history of his company the Newton Rifles and of his rather famous poem to his wife while at Camp Chase. His poem to his wife can be read online entering his name and unit.

He was taken prisoner by Genera Garrard which was part of Wilder's Brigade and his Cavalry on July 22, 1864 in Newton County, now in Conyers County, Georgia although he was just a school teacher at the time of his arrest.

He had a son named Joseph Augustus Guinn born about 1863. JAG would later marry Nancy Graham. The library today at Conyers, Georgia bears the name of the Nancy Guinn Memorial Library in Conyers, Georgia.
