We all know that the July 21, 1861 battle of First Manassas (aka First Bull Run) was later referred to as "the great skedaddle." I am trying to learn when that phrase was first used to describe that battle, i.e. a specific newspaper and date. That phrase is mentioned everywhere on the internet with regards to the battle but never a citation as to first when and where. I am not looking for a history of the word "skedaddle," only when it first appeared as a specific reference to that battle. I've conducted a pretty deep internet search, including digitized newspapers from the days after the fight using sources such as Chronicling America, Ancestry, Genealogy Bank, etc. All have come up empty. Of course, I have probably overlooked something. A good number of sites say that it first appeared in the Southern press and I've seen a place or two that even mention Atlanta newspapers. Thanks to all in advance for any additional insight!
