When William Jackson's Cavalry Division arrived in north Georgia in May 1864, they were placed on the left of Johnston's army. Wheeler's cavalry corps was usually on the right. Jackson worked for Polk, not Wheeler.
I would bet that the fight with McCook's troops were against some of Wheeler's men. McCook got through Wheeler's screen to penetrate into Hood's rear at Cassville and attacked his last division in line of march. Wheeler tightened his screen after that.
