Re: Nathan Chaffin, Henry Guards

Thanks, George. I poked around and Capt. J. N. Chaffin appears to be Jasper Newton Chaffin, b. 1823 in Greenville, S.C.; living in Itawamba Co., Miss., in 1860; enlisted as a private in 4th Alabama Cavalry (Roddy’s), captured at Glendale, Miss., 2/13/63; promoted to Capt, Co. E, Moreland’s Cavalry Battalion (later Regiment) on 9/30/63; killed 7/29/64 at Newnan, Ga.

I found a Nathaniel Chafin in the 1860 Franklin Co., Ala., census. That’s the county where Moreland’s Cavalry Battalion was organized in August 1863. If Nathaniel Chafin was 14 in July 1860, then he would be 17 or 18 in August 1863 so it's possible he is the Pvt. N. Chaffin on their roll. His place of enlistment, Molton, which I take to be Moulton, is in neighboring Lawrence Co. These counties are in northern Alabama approximately 200 miles from Randolph Co., Ala., and even further from Henry Co., Ga. So, based on age and geography, it seems unlikely he would be the Nathan Chaffin who mustered with the Henry Guards in June 1861.
