“While in line of service as a soldier in Chattanooga Tenn. and being in the Cavalry, I was on horse back most of my time and while riding in a drill on a very hard trotting horse I was badly ruptured and to such an extent that the army surgeons recommend my discharge . . . I was discharged in July 1862 as being incompetent to perform regular military duty. From said injury I have never recovered and by reason of it I am totally incompetent to perform the ordinary manual vocation of life.”
