Re: Smoothbore muskets at Gettysburg

The entire Second Corps (including the Georgia brigades of Gordon and Doles) used caliber .58 muskets at Gettysburg, according to Colonel William Allan, Chief of Ordnance of the Second Corps.

Examining the few identified "buck and ball" casualties among Federal units, none suggest a Georgia connection. Corporal Thomas Lewis of Company E, 5th Michigan, was struck on the arm by a round ball; on the second day his regiment fought near the Stony Hill against G. T. Anderson's Georgians (among others), but Lewis might have been wounded on the third day.
