Re: How many Confederates killed at Resaca?

Thank you. Your reply is thought provoking.

At this time, I don't have stats on numbers killed at Resaca, so it isn't possible to know if there is a discrepancy between the 400 or so buried by Ms. Green at Resaca Cemetery and the total number killed.

We have spent 10 years searching for AJ Cooper, who left almost no paper record behind, other than his military records. We understand that we will never know precisely where his remains are; perhaps he was vaporized by cannon fire, as you mention -- something we had not thought about.

We have located the approximate physical site where he fought, under A.J. Vaughn. I don't have the book here, but it may have been Phillip Seacrist's book that mentions a comment attributed to General Johnston about how well a certain contingent of troops were fighting at the Resaca Battle --Johnston's aide told him it was the 154th.

My further research will be to read the OR and see if I can find approximate numbers killed + the missing, etc. We want to make an educated guess as to the likelihood that he is buried at Resaca Cemetery.

Apparently the 154th never took another formal muster after Resaca, as per one of the posters here on history-sites.com when I made an inquiry a few years ago.

Thanks very much for your thoughtful reply.
