Incredible work! That is my relative Archer Avary. He did live until 1937. My great grandmother Phoebe Flanigan lived with A. Avary when she was 10 years old. Her father was Henry H. Flanigan who served with 63rd Georgia Regiment 1863-65. He had two brothers. James and William Flanigan who also served in Georgia outfits. I believe all of the ancestors did apply for Confederate pensions. I don't think it was all that hard to get these pensions. This was possibly a way for Georgia to stick the USA in the eye. I believe that an Avary married a Flanigan and that is my relationship to the Avary family. The Avary family tree goes back to 1660 in Virginia. From there they go back to Cornwall in England. One Avary was a judge in Colonial America so this is why I think I can trace them via Ancestry.com. Flanigans record stops with Gamin Flanigan in 1820 in Georgia.

I don't understand why my great grandmother was living with Archer Avary in 1880 instead of with her father H. H. Flanigan. I believe the families of my confederate ancestors were broken up by death of parents and by poverty. Even my grandmother who was born in 1894 did some time in an orphanage when her father died of TB. He was a Stanford. I am not sure if he was a CSA vet, but my great, grandmother was born in 1869-70.

James and William Flanigan both applied for confederate pensions and I think Henry did as well. It was $60 a month for them. Ed, thanks again for your fantastic work. I am impressed as hell. I am a "King" because my paternal grandfather came from Russia and obviously got a new name. He spoke with a Russian accent or at least Slavic accent. He was from Belarus and who knows what he real name was because I don't. His family was probably running from something.
