John, some folks on this site have their own expertize and mine is Camp Chase. I've studied the Seminole Indians wars but am more familiar with finding artifacts of those conflicts. There were three separate Seminole Indian wars. The longest and the most costly was the 2nd Seminole war starting with Dade's massacre in December of 1835 and the war lasted until 1842.

In my opinion the 2nd Seminole Indian war was much like Viet Nam in some ways. The United States military could not obtain a clear cut victory. Many troops from Georgia participated in the war. Also in my opinion more future generals fought in the Seminole Indians wars than did in the Mexican war. Even future General (Stonewall) Jackson was a junior officer at Fort Meade during the 3rd Seminole Indian war.

fold 3 may have your ancestors service records. Ironically Fort King located in Ocala, Florida was a rather large Fort site (but probably no relation to your family) as was Fort Brooke established in 1824 and located in what is now downtown Tampa, Florida. Major Dade was ambushed during a march from Fort King to Fort Brooke near Christmas of 1835.
