Re: Would like some feedback on J.B. Spears

Well gentlemen the mystery has been solved in my opinion. I got very lucky today while visiting the Georgia Archives south of Atlanta, Georgia. They had the original rosters for the 1st Georgia Regiment State Troops. Years ago I remember one of the body snatching victims as taken prisoner at the Battle of Utoy Creek and he had been with the 1st Georgia State Troops. Since all three of these soldiers were taken prisoners on August 7, 1864 which was the date of the Battle of Utoy Creek I thought perhaps they could be members of this unit. No references at all could be found for them as members of the 1st State Troops other than their reports on the muster rolls. This would further explain why Lillian Henderson did have them listed in her work as she did not do the 1st Georgia State Troops. The odds of three soldiers have the same exact names I believe are proof enough. Here they are:

Private Peter J. LAMB - Inscription on tombstone #250 reads “PETER J. LAMB CO. E 6 GA. REG. C.S.A.” He was taken prisoner during the Atlanta Campaign. (May 7 – September 2, 1864) He died on Friday, September 16, 1864 due to typhoid fever. The compiler notes the 6th Georgia Infantry was not at the Atlanta Campaign but rather with the Army of Northern Virginia. No records other than Federal POW Records could be located in the 6th Georgia Infantry. The original muster rolls for Company E of the 1st Regiment Georgia State Troops was located at the Georgia State Archives in Record Group 22-1-63. This unit was also known as Gaut’s Regiment. In the muster rolls it listed "P. J. Lamb as enlisting on January 8, 1863 in Marietta, Georgia" and it was noted he was paid $22.00 every two months. If the compiler were making the tombstone it would read: “PETER J. LAMB CO E 1 GA. REG. S.T. C.S.A.”

Private Isaac D. SPEARS - Inscription on tombstone #406 reads “J. B. SPEARS CO. E. 1 GA. REG. C.S.A.” He was taken prisoner during the Atlanta Campaign. (May 7 – September 2, 1864) He died on Friday, November 4, 1864 due to pneumonia. His name was listed on his Federal POW Records as Isaac D. Speers in the 6th Georgia Infantry. The 6th Georgia was not at the Atlanta Campaign but rather with the Army of Northern Virginia. No Records could be located for J. B. Spears in the 1st Georgia Regiment. The original muster rolls for Company E of the 1st Regiment Georgia State Troops was located at the Georgia State Archives in Record Group 22-1-63. This unit was also known as Gaut’s Regiment. In the muster rolls it listed "Isaac D. Spears as enlisting on March 8, 1864 in Atlanta, Georgia" and it was noted he was never paid. If the compiler were making the tombstone it would read: “ISAAC D. SPEARS CO E 1 GA. REG. S.T. C.S.A.”

Private John M. WATSON SENIOR- Inscription on tombstone #626 reads “JNO. M. WATSON CO. E 1 GA. REG. C.S.A.” He was taken prisoner during the Atlanta Campaign. (May 7 – September 2, 1864) #3 He died on Saturday, December 17, 1864 due to chronic diarrhea. The compiler notes his Federal POW Records are located in the 6th Regiment, Georgia Infantry however the 6th Georgia Infantry was not at the Atlanta Campaign but rather with the Army of Northern Virginia. No Records could be located for J. B. Spears in the 1st Georgia Regiment. The original muster rolls for Company E of the 1st Regiment Georgia State Troops was located at the Georgia State Archives in Record Group 22-1-63. This unit was also known as Gaut’s Regiment. In the muster rolls it listed J. M. Watson Sr. as enlisting on January 8, 1863 in Marietta, Georgia. Later muster rolls showed him paid $22.00 every two months. If the compiler were making the tombstone it would read: “JOHN M. WATSON SENIOR CO E 1 GA. REG. S.T. C.S.A.”
