The information on his service history came from the National Archives Compiled Service Records which are available on-line through Fold.3, a subscription service.

I have access to Ancestry.com but I only subscribe when they offer a six month half price deal, $49 for six months.

I have not looked into pension papers for Avery. As he was a Druggist and Physician, I doubt that he was ever in indigent circumstances which was required.

Confederates did not receive medals, there was a Roll of Honor which company members could vote one man to it following some battles. None are shown for Cobb’s Legion.

Nor were any form of identification provided. Captured Confederates when released on parole had to carry a copy of their Parole Certificates which usually contained their physical description.

I cannot speak for Union soldiers discharge forms.

And yes, Confederate doctors were instructed in the use of chloroform.

As to the picture of him in uniform. I rather doubt that this was a war issue as by the time of his enlistment, the army seems to have been in a rather rag tag condition. I suspect that his costume was bought for use in later post war reunions.

………..

I believe this photo of Dr. Archer Avery is your man.

Dr. Archer Avery (5 Oct. 1847- 12 Sept. 1937) was born in Columbia County, Georgia. He served in the Confederate cavalry during the U.S. Civil War. He married Eugenia Avery (27 April 1862- 14 Feb. 1918) in 1898 and they had a son, Archer Avery, Jr. who was born in 1897. He was an Atlanta druggist and physician. They are buried in Decatur Cemetery in Decatur, Georgia.

……….

Born in 1847, he would have turned Conscription age of 17 October 1864 which would explain his enlistment that month.
