Re: Army of Northern Virginia General Order No. 87

Mr. Griffin,

James Castleberry, Private, Company G, 60th Georgia Infantry. Trial December 9, 1862. Violation of Article of War #46. Sentence: Company Punishment. Source: "Roster of the Courts-Martial in the Confederate States," by Jack A. Bunch. The companion book is "Military Justice in the Confederate States." He used many different sources for this roster but the primary source was likely Endorsements on Court-Martial Correspondence, Record Group 109, Chapter 1, Volumes 201.

Article of War # 46 reads, "Any sentinel who shall be found sleeping upon his post, or shall leave it before he shall be regularly relieved, shall suffer death, or such other punishment as shall be inflicted by the sentence of a court-martial." Source: Regulation for the Army of the Confederate States, 1863. The 1862 regulation would have been likely the same for this article.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Respectfully,
