Dennis, your assumption that the POW records are from 1863 appears likely because of the various skirmishes listed in the link to the historical marker there (http://www.lat34north.com/historicmarkers/MarkerDetail.cfm?KeyID=027-HT-U33&MarkerTitle=Alpine%20Georgia); however, there is a possibility that men may have been captured when the AOT travelled through Summerville and Alpine, Georgia on their way to Gaylesville, Blue Pond, and Gadsden, Alabama in October of 1864.

Check these references:

Ashley, Joe and Lavon, Oh For Dixie! “The Civil War Record and Diary of Capt. William V. Davis, 30th Mississippi Infantry, CSA”, Standing Pine Press, Colorado Springs, CO, 2001, p73.

[1864]
“[October] Monday, 17-March 2 ½ a. m. A.M. Miller Killed. March to Summerville, 12 miles by 7 a.m. Cross Chattooga River, Chattooga County. Genl Hood passes. Hiram throws off moccasins. Have Biscuits and pork for breakfast. Camp 4 miles from Pineville. 50 [Probably Alpine]. March 20 miles. Have Beans & Peas for supper, Chattooga County.”

Footnote 50: “Captain Davis probably meant Alpine, Georgia, located in Chattooga County near the Alabama border. On the night of 17 October, Hood’s headquarters was located three miles from the fork of the Summerville and Alpine and the Gaylesville (Alabama) Road (USWD 1891-1895, plate CXLIX; OR, ser. 39, pt. 1, 807, 809).

Skellie, Ron, Lest We Forget-The Immortal Seventh Mississippi,, Vol. II, 2012, Page 772.

In my book I highlight the fact that Davis mentions that a man was killed as they marched from Broom Valley to Summerville, GA. ["Pvt. Andrew M. Miller, Co. E 30th Mississippi Inf. was killed October 17, 1864 near Summerville, GA]

“On October 17th Hood’s Army had turned southwest and arrived at Alpine, Alabama [Georgia] on the 17th. Capt. Davis wrote of the march from Broom Town Valley to Summerville. Apparently there was some type of action along the way because a man was killed as they marched. “March 2 ½ a.m. A. M. Miller killed. March to Summerville, 12 miles by 7 a.m. Cross Chattooga River, Chattooga County. Genl Hood passes…Camp 4 miles from Pineville [Probably Alpine]. March 20 miles. Have Beans & Peas for supper, Chattooga County.”
