John Aaron Crawford, 18th Georgia Infantry

In the book, General Catalogue of The Centre College of Kentucky, 1890, an interesting alumni (1848 graduate, p. 160) is described - John Aaron Crawford. The son of John and Martha Crawford, he was born on July 4, 1824 in Laurence District, South Carolina. He was prepared for college at Cassville, Georgia. When war arrived, he became captain of Company K, 18th Georgia. He served at Yorktown, Seven Pines, Second Manassas and Sharpsburg (Antietam), where he was severely wounded. After recovering, he rejoined his unit and took part in the battle of Gettysburg, where he was again wounded. It is reported that he rose to the rank of colonel. After the war he returned to Cassville and took up farming, with a two year stint in the Georgia legislature. Having survived the ravages of war, a tiny honeybee took his life on May 24, 1876. He died 15 minutes after being stung. He never married. I have posted this because information on the 18th Georgia at Gettysburg is fairly scarce. I'm not sure Crawford is even listed as a Gettysburg casualty on Lillian Henderson's Roster of the Confederate Soldiers of Georgia.
