Re: Co. F, 21st GA, Ben Hill Infantry

Thanks, Steve and Guy. I have an old document plus two books that show John Porter enlisted in Co. F. 21st GA (Ben Hill Infantry). All three brothers were living in Antioch, Troup Co., GA and all enlisted 9 July 1861 and were to take the train from LaGrange 9 days later to Richmond, VA to be mustered in. My g-grandpa was the youngest boy and always said all three boys left together for the War and never came home. I sent for Military paperwork for all three Porter boys BUT the one for John Porter has the paperwork for John W. Porter (he was also from Troup Co., GA but he joined Co. E, 21st GA and later transferred to a NC Unit where he died. He was the son of Jeramiah Porter). My Porter boys were the sons of James and Tabitha Porter. Later paperwork from Troup Co., GA has no mention at all of John Porter. The book Campaigning with Old Stonewall says that not only did my John Porter enlist 9 July 1861 in Co. F, 21st GA Ben Hill Infantry but he also lived until 1900. I truly think the paperwork has been messed up. (I personally believe that John Porter probably got sick on the way to Richmond and was left with a farmer and probably died there). It has always been said the the Civil War wiped my Porter family out, if he did survive I just don't understand why he would not have come back to Troup Co., GA to see his mother, Tabitha Porter McJunkin and younger brother Elisha A. Porter. John Porter would have only been 18 in 1861.
